CORNING, N.Y. -- The Corning Salvation Army is helping kids start the school year off right. On Tuesday was the backpack giveaway and parents and students came in to get a free backpack filled with some school supplies.
This year, the group packed 700 bags in efforts to address the growing need for assistance.
"Our goal is to try to reach to the people that are falling in the cracks of where the help is coming and where there's no help available because they earn just a penny too much in their paycheck. So those are the people we're really trying to target this year," said Salvation Army Captain Kim Merchant.
The Salvation Army says it's working with the schools and families in the area to make sure the extra bags get to those who need them.
