WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Barack Obama said Thursday night he has authorized the U.S. military to carry out airstrikes in Iraq against Islamic militants if they advance toward the city of Erbil.

In a primetime address to the nation, the president said he doesn't want to embroil our country in another full out war, but that he will do what ever is necessary to keep Americans safe abroad.

"The world is confronted by many challenges, and while we cannot right every wrong, we can make the world a better place," said President Obama. "Our security is needed to underwrite the global security our children and grandchildren will depend on."

The U.S. on Thursday began to drop food, water and other humanitarian aid to Iraqi citizens fleeing the violence.

An estimated 15,000 people are caught on a mountaintop with no food or water. They cannot descend into militant-held territory for fear of being killed. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
