Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. YNN's Carmella Mataloni has more on how local communities are honoring the anniversary.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Although it has been 12 years since the attacks on the U.S., there are still several ceremonies scheduled to honor the victims, and those who risked their lives in 9/11.

SUNY Broome Community College is holding a ceremony at the Darwin Wales Administration Building. Local officials are expected to speak, followed by a moment of silence and a raising of the flag.

According to campus officials, several first responders received their degrees from SUNY Broome, and this ceremony provides a chance to salute their hard work.

"It is just something that is very basic to the concious of this country and people need to remember how we all need to take our freedoms seriously because a lot of times people can overlook that," said Dr. Francis Battisti, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer.

SUNY Broome isn't the only place throughout the city remembering 9/11. Vestal Elementary and Elmira College will also hold ceremonies on Wednesday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
