CENTRAL NEW YORK -- The latest list out Friday by the Business Journal is a who's who of who's signing paychecks in Central New York.
"It includes the largest private sector employers in the Central New York region that we cover," said Business Journal research manager Nicole Collins. "It's sixteen counties from St. Lawrence down to Broome, Seneca over to Herkimer. And it's ranked by the total local employee workforce."
The private sector designation means places like colleges and hospitals are not included.
"Right there you're taking out some of the big employers, like SUNY Upstate and Cornell, which all have over nine thousand employees," collins said. "But we were specifically focused on doing just the private sector list to see how they represented the private sector region."
The Oneida Indian Nation, Lockheed Martin, Price Chopper and Time Warner Cable are all in the top 10. And topping the list at almost 5,500 employees: Wegman's.
"It was an honor for us to receive this designation, particularly from the Central New York Business Journal, which is really in our neighborhood," said Wegman's Syracuse Region Community Relations Director Evelyn Carter. "So it really is a good feeling for us to know that we are thought of in that light."
Carter said their secret to staying competitive is simple: It's about keeping their employees happy.
"Our focus is to treat our employees right," Carter said. "We believe that if we continue to do that, they in turn will treat our customers right and therefore you lead to customers who are satisfied, and employees who are happy."
A strategy she hopes will keep the company at the top of the list.
The 100 businesses on the list employ almost 100,000 people in Central New York. The list is featured in the latest edition of the Central New York Business Journal.
