NEW YORK STATE FAIRGROUNDS -- The much-anticipated day has arrived. The Great New York State Fair starts a run of 12 fun-filled days celebrating everything New York.
The first day of the fair is known as Governor's Day. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, along with gubernatorial hopefuls Rob Astorino and Zephyr Teachout, are at the fair.
People made their way through the turnstiles Thursday morning to be among the first to check out the rides, exhibits and the food.
"Breakfast, breakfast, breakfast. And we want to see all the new rides, and all the new people, and it looks really nice," said Linda Whipple.
"The cleanliness, meeting new people, we have friends that came up from Florida, we meet here every year for the first day of the fair," said Robert Whipple.
There are new ride specials throughout the fair. More than 60 rides have been set up in the last few weeks including the R-C 48 Roller Coaster, one of two of the largest traveling roller coasters in the country.
Some new attractions include a new Great Lakes exhibit, an animatronic dinosaur exhibit, and a World of Wolves Show.
Returning from last year is the new and improved dairy cow birthing center, where people can watch the birth of baby calves.
Officials said there's a lot of excitement behind opening day.
"People can come out and experience the flair of the new Midway company. And, I just think for us, on the fair staff it's just that joyous occasion, it's like Christmas on the next 12 days after that," said fair acting director Troy Waffner.
What would the fair be without the food, whether it's something fried, or something someone has never tried, it'll be at the fair.
There's also plenty of entertainment. Kellie Pickler kicks things off with a free afternoon concert at Chevy Court at 2 p.m. Barenaked Ladies will perform at 8 p.m.
Country music superstar Brad Paisley will take the stage at the Grandstand at 7.30 p.m. Other Grandstand performers include Pitbull on Saturday, Kid Rock on Monday and Jason Aldean on August 30.
The fair includes dozens of rides, exhibits, activities, entertainment and agriculture events.
Make sure to stop by the Time Warner Cable News booth outside the Science and Industry Building.
