MANLIUS, N.Y. -- A local Girl Scout organizes a Hair-A-Thon to help women suffering from hair loss.
Stylists at Mario's Hair Designs in Manlius cut the hair, which will be donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. The organization creates and donates wigs to women suffering from hair loss.
Elizabeth DiGennaro organized the event in hopes of earning her Girl Scout Gold Award. It's one of the highest honors a scout can earn. But the inspiration behind the event was also personal.
"We had a family friend who had cancer a few years ago, so I saw firsthand how she lost her hair and how she was always worried about having a good wig that looked nice. So I thought that was really important, because when someone has cancer they're going through a really rough time in their life and they shouldn't have to worry their hair so they should have something for free that they don't have to worry about the cost and something that looks good," said Elizabeth DiGennaro, organizer.
DiGennaro's goal was to get 36 people to donate their hair. That would make about six wigs.
