GEDDES, N.Y. — Thousands of people will gather Sunday night at Veterans Memorial Watchfire Park at the State Fairgrounds for a longtime Memorial Day tradition.
The Watchfire stems from an old tradition of starting a large fire after a battle to guide missing soldiers back to camp.
It has been a tradition in Syracuse for nearly two decades and it gives people a chance to properly dispose of their old flags.
Volunteers were busy setting up the massive wood pile over the past few days.
The event kicks off at dusk.
