State Senate passes bill to allow pre-arraignment inmates at Jefferson Co. jail

  • Text size: + -

The state Senate approved a bill Wednesday that would allow the city of Watertown to house inmates waiting for arraignment at the Jefferson County jail.

For decades that's exactly what the city had been doing, but earlier this year, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said it could no longer happen because New York state said it was against the law.

The shared-services bill written by state Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Oswegatchie, would not only allow Watertown police to use the jail for pre-arraignment housing, but all police agencies in the county.

The bill was sent to the Assembly for a possible vote. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
