UTICA, N.Y. -- Wednesday was a day for recognizing award-winning athletes in Oneida County.
The men's and women's varsity basketball teams from New York Mills and Notre Dame were honored, in addition to Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin. The athletes were presented with award certificates during a ceremony.
Oneida County officials emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and working together as a team. They also announced a program for teens that will be renamed in honor of Hamlin.
It's now called the Oneida County Erin Hamlin Summer Youth Program. The Remsen native says she hopes to see more great athletes come out of the area.
"It's really cool to see so many people get excited about such a unique sport like mine and the olympics in general. So if I can inspire one or two people in all the kids I meet and talk to it'd be worth it," said Hamlin.
The county also recognized student members of the 4H club for their achievements.
