WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The Watertown Privateers will likely not play another season in the city they've called home for several years.

That's because the minor-professional hockey team's current owner didn't submit a bid for next season.

Instead, a group of 6 local residents have secured rights to next year's ice time.

Although that group had expressed interest in purchasing the Privateers in the past, that no longer seems likely.

"I think it's just their preference of wanting to start fresh and new with a new team with their name behind it," said City of Watertown Parks and Recreation Department Superintendent Erin Gardner.

If the group were to change their mind and purchase the Privateers, the parks department says they'll change the team's name. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
