SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Onondaga County honors the hard work and dedication of local correctional officers.
In honor of National Correctional Officers week, the county legislature presented personnel in the Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Corrections with a gold seal resolution Tuesday.
The County Legislature passed the resolution after the sheriff's office realized they did not already have one recognizing National Correctional Officers' Week.
The Chief Deputy says this week is all about raising awareness about what they do for the community
"Nobody really knows what goes on inside of jail or prison. It's just a mystery to the community. This week is an opportunity for us to say, come on inside our facilities. Take a tour if you like. Here's what we do. Here's how we keep the community safe," said Chief Deputy of Custody Department at Onondaga Sheriff's Office Esteban Gonzalez.
The Onondaga Sheriff's Department is planning to host tours for the public in the future.
