VERONA, N.Y. -- State police have ruled the double fatal train accident in Oneida County a murder-suicide.

Troopers say Earl Myatt and his wife Mary were standing on tracks near Fox Road in the Town of Verona when they were hit by a CSX train Sunday afternoon. At first, it appeared to be a double suicide, but state police were able to piece together what happened.

According to the couple's relatives, Myatt became grief stricken after his wife suffered a brain aneurysm in January that left her with the mental capacity of a toddler. Troopers say Myatt called his son to apologize before the two stepped onto the tracks.

A suicide note was left in their car. The two were married for 42 years. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
