SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Officials at Justice John Lawton's former law firm say he died Wednesday.
Lawton graduated from the School of Law at Saint John's University in 1955.
He went on to work at the law firm of MacKenzie Hughes in Syracuse for nearly three decades, eventually becoming partner.
Lawton spent seven years serving in the Onondaga County Legislature.
He was elected to the State Supreme Court, Fifth Judicial District in 1982, and later appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo to the Appellate Division.
Lawton retired in 2005 after serving five years as a Senior Associate Justice.
