WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department has a new member, a two-year-old German shepherd named Mike.
Mike replaces Liberty, a department K-9 who just retired.
And for a welcoming gift, the North Country Kennel Club stopped by the office Friday afternoon to fit Mike with a bulletproof vest.
Mike's handler, Deputy Shawn Ryan, says the dog is certified in narcotics detection, handler protection, article searching and controlled tracking which makes this vest crucial.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Shawn Ryan said, "We both get involved in situations whether it's a barricaded subject or a lot of subjects in this area with weapons. It's added protection, not just for the K-9, but for myself."
North Country Kennel Club Melissa Ordway said, "They go out there detecting drugs, bombs, finding people. They deserve all the protection they can get."
Last year the Kennel donated a vest to the department's other K-9 and also to the city of Watertown's police dog.
