NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A local National Guardsman was honored by Governor Andrew Cuomo for helping to save a driver during a fiery crash on the Thruway last year.

Sgt. Raymond Presley, 48, was awarded the New York State Medal of Valor on Thursday. He was driving his tractor trailer when he saw the crash near exit 35 in DeWitt. Presley and a few other good samaritans worked together to pull the driver from the wreck as it started catching fire.

Ironically, the crash victim was Presley's captain in the National Guard, Timothy Neild. The group was able to extinguish the flames on Neild's clothing, and make sure he was away from the vehicle before it exploded.

Presley has been with the New York Army National Guard since 1991, and is currently assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
