Fish Fry Businesses throughout the region gear up for this time of year. But, whether it's for religious reasons or just some great fish fry people are taking advantage of the great food. As our Katie Gibas reports, for some organizations, these lenten fish fries help them pay their bills and continue their mission throughout the year.
CICERO, N.Y. -- It would be an understatement to say Fridays during lent are busy. The Cicero American Legion does fish fries throughout the year. On a regular Friday, they serve about 800 dinners. During lent, it's nearly 1,000.
"This is our big push. It's like a retailer's Christmas season," said Mark Adams, the Cicero American Legion Commander.
Many organizations depend on the Lenten fish fries to pay their bills and continue their Christian missions throughout the year.
"We designate Sunday for benefits, so for people who have cancer or something happens, we don't charge them. And that's something that we do because we have this fish fry. When somebody's really down and hurting, that's when they really need the help. And I feel like that's why we do this, so we're able to do that," said Adams.
And none of it would be possible without the dozens of volunteers cooking, serving and cleaning.
"We'll have like three crews that come in and help. They are some that'll be there at the beginning and at the end. I can't thank those people enough. They're the ones that are really the true heroes per se of why this happens," said Adams.
Those here at the Cicero American Legion say this fish fry is one of the best in the area. And I have to say, I did have some and it was pretty good. But since I haven't tried even a fraction of the fish fries in the area, I'm going to leave it up to you guys.
