WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- A long-time Watertown business is given the key to the city and it was a big surprise for the company's owner.
Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham was at Cheney Tire to help celebrate its 60th birthday.
Graham presented owner Tom Cheney with a certificate and the key to the city.
Cheney was overcome with emotion during the ceremony.
His staff kept it a secret, telling him they were having a 'Cabin Fever Hot Dog grill-out' trying to beat the winter.
Cheney says serving the community has always been what this business was about and his late father would be very proud.
"That's all he ever talked about, taking care of his customers. Fixing somebody's car or pulling someone out of the ditch, plowing someone's driveway. At a very young age I'd hang with him," said Tom Cheney, Cheney Tire Owner.
"These are people who work hard, provide a service and don't really ask for anything in return. They're the perfect kind of business people you'd like to have as members of the community," said Jeff Graham, Watertown Mayor.
Cheney says one of his earliest memories is being three years old, sitting with his grandfather, watching the business be built.
