A local school district has launched a fundraiser with a very valuable life lesson for students. Vestal Schools are teaching kids to give back to the community through a food drive. Carmella Mataloni has the story.
VESTAL, N.Y. -- In celebration of National School Counseling Week, a food drive called "We Are One", is a district-wide food drive. Several schools are participating, and it's been quite successful in the past.
Seven schools in the Vestal Central School District are participating, including five elementary schools, a middle school, and the high school. Last year, the district donated more than a ton and a half of food to CHOW, a local food organization.
Many of the younger students are pushing to make the effort to provide a bag or box of food into the bin. The elementary schools are in the midst of their kindness challenge, and giving back to others and getting involved in the community is part of the task.
According to Principal Brad Bruce at Clayton Avenue Elementary, it's amazing to see how much these young kids want to give back.
Bruce says, "We look for opportunities to help out our community, and just really our focus this year at Clayton Avenue is thinking beyond ourselves and looking to others and being a good citizen."
The drive continues through the end of the week.
