ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira community celebrates Ernie Davis' legacy on his birthday.
The Ernie Davis Community Center put on a display for the public Thursday, featuring many awards and other memorabilia, including Davis' Heisman Trophy, which he won at Syracuse University in 1961.
After growing up in Elmira, many in the community followed his life and sports career. One of the people checking out the display was actually a former classmate of Davis.
"He was in my homeroom and I got to know him really well. He was a great person, not just a great athlete. He was a great person. And that's what rang the bell for me," said Bob Hill.
Davis died of leukemia at age 23. He would have been 74 years old.
