SOUTH AFRICA -- Unparallel world leader, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and beloved President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela has died after battling a recurring lung infection. He was 95.

Mandela was receiving around the clock home-based intensive care in his Johannesburg, South Africa home.

The icon played an essential role in South Africa's liberation from apartheid, a system that denied blacks the vote, segregated them into poorly served townships and relegated them to a second class education.

Mandela's health had taken a turn for the worse recently. He was hospitalized numerous times for severe pneumonia and other ailments and rendered unable to speak due to a breathing tube. His home had been turned into a hospital of sorts, sterilized, to keep him from getting any infections.

Thousands of South Africans and world leaders are sending their prayers to Mandela's family.

Again, civil rights pioneer and former South African President Nelson Mandela has died, at age 95.
