MADISON COUNTY, N.Y. -- The investigation continues into two separate car crashes that left a woman seriously injured.
Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to the first crash around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on Harsh Road in the Town of Sullivan. They say a car driven by Carolyn Kaplan, 53, of Oneida, lost control and hit a guardrail on the bridge.
A car travelling in the same direction, driven by Colleen Hyland, 48, tried to go around the crashed car, but also lost control. Deputies say Hyland's car hit the first car and then a cement bridge abutment. The impact caused Hyland's car to flip over off the bridge, landing in the Erie Canal in about three feet of water.
Hyland was taken to a Syracuse hospital where she is listed in very serious condition. She is a seventh grade social studies teacher at Chittenango Middle School.
Kaplan was uninjured.
