WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- A Watertown native has officially announced that he's running for Jefferson County Sheriff, which is up for grabs next November.
Republican John Bocciolatt was born and raised in Watertown. He started his career in Oregon, where he eventually worked undercover to solve some major serial killer cases.
Bocciolatt announced Tuesday morning that he's always wanted to return home to address some of the area's problems.
"You know, I've noticed, unlike when I left, there wasn't a heroin problem. We thought heroin was just something people did in New York City here. That is an issue here. And we will build proactive teams, not just undercover narcotics people, but uniform people will be a part of dealing with and managing the narcotics problem we have here," Bocciolatt said.
At this point, no other candidates have announced their plan to run.
Incumbent Sheriff John Burns is finishing out his final term in office.
