CENTRAL NEW YORK -- With the busiest shopping days now behind us, non-profits are hoping to get a little of your attention. Today has been dubbed Giving Tuesday.
The initiative was started last year as a way for non-profits to engage with communities. The Central New York Community Foundation jumped on board this year, launching an online competition with a very lucrative award. They're giving $5,000 away to the local charity that can garner the most votes on facebook and twitter. They say it's a jumping off point for non-profits to capture the community's attention.
"If you went online you'd see examples of this all around the country." said Peter Dunn, CNY Community Foundation President and C.E.O. "It hasn't been used so much in CNY, so we wanted to find a way to incentivise non-profits to engage with their own constituencies using social media in thinking more broadly about ways to generate revenue for their charitable purposes."
To vote for your favorite charity, just go to the CNY Community Foundation's Facebook page or log on to Twitter and post the name of a foundation with #GivingTuesday CNY.
