FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- On Thursday, Fort Drum celebrates its one year anniversary of the functional fitness center.
The center promotes a new workout regiment in an effort to better prepare soldiers for battle. The Atkins Functional Fitness Center hosted a strongman and strongwoman competition for soldiers to test their skills.
The participants competed in a variety of events, including weightlifting, hurdles, and truck pulling. According to management, the center has really taken off, and made a big difference in total body movement and mind strength.
"I'm feeling very proud of this facility and I'm very proud of the FMWR team that's helped me put these events together. I'm proud of the way the soldiers interact here and have took charge of this facility," said Randy Gillette, Atkins Functional Fitness Manager.
The center has also helped families of soldiers get properly prepared for when loved ones are overseas. They teach families a variety of activities, including learning to properly pick up boxes, groceries and even children.
