A local effort is underway to find a cure for a rare brain condition. As YNN's Brad Vivacqua reports, Hydrocephalus affects more than 100,000 people in the country.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Hydrocephalus is found in one out of every 500 children, but it can also be found in adults.

On Sunday, a 5K run and walk will be held in Tully to educate people about the condition and raise money for research.

Currently, the main form of treatment is surgery that includes a tube placed in the brain to move excess fluid to the stomach. Upstate University Neurosurgeon Satish Krishnamurthy has been working to find a cure without surgery.

Dr. Krishnamurthy now leads a group called Research, Educate, and Cure Hydrocephalus, or REACH. He said the group has two goals.

"One is educating everyone about the problem of hydrocephalus. Yes, there is a solution, but it's not ideal at all by any standards. And, second is to fund the research and accelerate the research so that we can have a cure on the table, before 2020," said Dr. Krishnamurthy.

He said the shunt surgery is usually successful, but adds it is costly and requires several lifetime checkups. Dr. Krishnamurthy believes finding a drug would be a better long term solution.

If you're interested in participating in the 5K on Sunday, head to The race begins at 10 a.m. at Tully High School.
