Eldridge Park officials received some surprising, but exciting news. The park is in the running to be 'America's Favorite Park,' - as part of a contest by Coca-Cola. YNN's Katie Husband tells us as a result, the sprucing up and community support, have ramped up.

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- "It's exciting. I would say, there's definitely an element of surprise, but there's an element of prestige that kind of goes with it," said Ryan Alo, Eldridge Park Manager.

He's talking about the recent announcement of Elmira's Eldridge Park running for 'America's Favorite Park.' The city's park is competing with about 8,500 different parks nationwide.

"We're trying to make sure the park looks all that much better. The staff is excited. Elmira has embraced this whole concept. I mean, here we are little ol' Elmira, New York in third place for America's Favorite Park and that's just huge for Eldridge," said Alo.

It's still early yet, but Eldridge sits pretty high in the standings. The first place winner will take home $100,000.

"We give out flyers and people say, 'oh that's great, I come here all the time, and I love what you guys have done with the park, and of course I'll vote,'" said Brian Alexander, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Eldridge Park.

Park officials said the recently completed $500,000 Midway Project, which makes Eldridge Park that much more attractive.

"We tore up all the blacktop and it was replaced with cement, and we put medians in, gardening is going in Thursday, lights around the lake for the walkers at night. All sorts of stuff has been going on," said Alo.

So, hopefully with the continuing efforts to spruce up the place, Eldridge Park can bring home the title.

"Bringing together Elmira as a community even more than it already is and that's something we really need a lot of nowadays," said Alexander.

There will be a Rock the Vote concert this Friday at 7 p.m. to raise community support.

All votes have to be in by July 15th.
