CONSTANTIA, N.Y. -- A man was killed in a logging accident in Constantia Friday morning.
Crews were called to Cook Road just before 8:30 a.m. where a tree fell on top of an experienced logger who was clearing land in that area.
Jerald Platt, 45, of Camden, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Platt and another man were clearing the land for his cousin's family. A member of that family says Platt and his relatives have been doing this type of work for decades.
Platt was alone in the woods when the accident happened, leaving officials with more questions than answers about his death.
"He had cut through a tree that measures about 45 inches in diameter, for reasons currently unknown to us, he stepped around to in front of the tree, at which time the tree fell on top of him. He was wearing safety gear. We know that he had a helmet on that included hearing protection, but the reason for why he may have come around to that side of the tree is still unknown," Oswego County Undersheriff Eugene Sullivan said.
The accident remains under investigation.
