Attracting the best and the brightest is something Colgate University takes pride in, especially when it comes to their Division I athletic teams. And the university is going the extra mile for student athletes. Our Cara Thomas has more on the planned facility.
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Since Starr Rink opened more than 50 years ago a lot has changed. Colgate University became a co-ed school, the athletic programs have grown, yet their hockey rink has primarily remained the same.
Miriam Drubel, a sophomore on the Women's Hockey Team, says, "The rink right now has a lot of character, it's getting pretty old I'd say."
"Starr Rink especially, it's getting dated and some upgrades are needed," says Greg Fargo, the Women's Hockey Head Coach.
Colgate athletes are excited to say out with the old and in with the new. Now that the board of trustees has approved the creation of a new $37.8 million athletic facility.
The 97,000 square foot building will hold new locker rooms, coaches offices for the ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer teams and a brand new hockey rink.
"I think the quality of the rink will be better and I think a lot of people will like to come play here once it's nicer and a lot of people will come watch more," says Drubel.
And high quality facilities attracts high quality players.
Fargo says, "To have the opportunity to play in a brand new rink and a brand new athletic facility, I think it's going to benefit us and try to attract some of those top players to our program."
But this new facility won't only benefit the hockey teams, coaches say it's a step in the right direction to help the entire Athletics Department.
"It frees up more space in Reid for teams to move and for teams to have locker rooms who perhaps didn't in the past," says Fargo.
While they're still very early in the process, they plan to have the new facility built within two to three years.
College representatives say the new athletic facility will be entirely funded by donations. So far, alumni and community members have committed more than $20 million.
