SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Some nice seasonal weather helped kick off the first weekend of Winterfest in Syracuse. Several events are being held throughout the city, including the construction of the ice castle, ice skating, and ice carving demonstrations.

Crowds gathered to watch as artists transformed the blocks of ice into works of art. And whether you are a spectator or doing the carving yourself, the event is a great reason to spend some time enjoying the crisp winter air.

Ice sculptor Adam Vural said, "It's just fun. It's getting outside. It's a unique talent. You know if you're trapped indoors all the time, a lot of us would like to have something to do outside. It's not a career, but at least it's as an avocation it gets me outside to do something fun."

The festival continues Sunday with several events, including a chowder cook-off in Hanover Square from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
