If you've thought about running for public office, you may want to take advantage of some training being offered for prospective candidates. The Central New York Political Leadership Institute is offering training beginning next month. An informational session is scheduled for tonight. YNN's Brad Vivacqua is in our newsroom and has more on this.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- This training is ideal for anyone who is considering running for political office. That may be anything from a village mayoral position to a position on a local school board. An informational session is set for tonight at the Doubletree Hotel to give people an idea of what this training is all about.

The Central New York Political Leadership Institute will begin sessions for eight weeks beginning February 6th. The curriculum will focus on topics ranging from getting on the ballot, campaign fundraising and working with the media. About 60 percent of the races in Onondaga County last year went uncontested. The goal is to help encourage more qualified candidates make a run for a political seat.

Kevin Tampone, CNY Political Institute Advisory Committee Chair, said, "We are trying to get more people involved with the process and more voices in the debate. And, I think you go to any incumbent, anybody who's in office now and ask them if that's a good thing, I think they would say yes. I really think it's one of the things that anyone who cares anything about our community, our state, our nation would agree on that, the more people you have at the table the better."

The sessions will take place for two hours every week at various Syracuse area locations. The registration cost is $100 and that covers tuition, supplies, and dinner at every session. The informational session tonight will take place again at the Doubletree Hotel in Syracuse at 6 p.m. That session is free.
