SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- He helped lead the Orange basketball team to its only national championship. Now, Syracuse University will honor Carmelo Anthony by retiring his jersey.
Anthony, currently in London with the New York Knicks, will be just the 10th player in SU history to have his jersey retired. The ceremony will take place during the SU-Georgetown game at the Carrier Dome on February 23rd.
Anthony led the Orange in scoring and rebounding for the 2002-2003 season. The team beat Kansas in the NCAA championship that season. Anthony was named the Big East Rookie of the Year, Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and was selected as an All-American.
Though he only played one season at SU, he made a large donation to the school which helped build the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.
In addition to the ceremony, the game will also mark the final Big East matchup between rivals SU and Georgetown, with the Orange joining the ACC next year.
