A new hospital is under construction in the Town of Corning. Just getting started on a large project like that is a major accomplishment. Getting it paid for is another feat altogether, but Guthrie Corning Hospital officials are more than halfway to their goal. YNN's Katie Husband tells us more about the facility and how the money is coming in.

CORNING, N.Y. -- "We're here celebrating another milestone for building our new Corning Hospital," said Shirley Magana, Corning Hospital, president.

That milestone is tied to the Building Healthier Communities fundraising campaign. The goal, $4 million for the new hospital in the town of Corning. Wednesday, they started accepting funding donations from the public.

"We also recognize a responsibility that comes along with that, to assure that we are serving the community in a way that they want to be served," said Magana.

Of the $4 million needed, $3 million has already been raised, thanks in large part to $1.5 million donation from the Corning Incorporated Foundation, building on a strong relationship with the community.

"We both serve the residents of this community and Corning Hospital is a long time partner and we're very, very proud to do whatever we can to advance their mission," said Karen Martin, Corning Inc. Foundation, president.

With every donation they receive, Guthrie Corning Hospital will be able to provide more services in the new state-of-the-art facility.

"So, it is much bigger than what we are currently working at treating our patients and is a state-of-the-art facility. That means we will have the best radiation oncology equipment here which we have been waiting for here, from my understanding, almost ten years in this area," said Dr. Aref Aghelr, Corning Guthrie Cancer Center, medical director.

A long awaited facility that will finally come a reality on July 12th, 2014 when the hospital is expected to open.

After the new hospital opens the old facility in the City of Corning will be demolished to make way for green space.

The hospital's president says eventually ,a developer will be brought in to construct something to benefit the needs of Corning. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
