Syracuse University will introduce the school's newest head football coach later today. Scott Shafer, most recently SU's defensive coordinator, will take over for Doug Marrone who accepted the Buffalo Bills head coaching job earlier this week. YNN's Brad Vivacqua has a preview from the newsroom.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Later today, SU Athletic Director Daryl Gross will formally introduce Scott Shafer as the new football coach.

Although Shafer has been on the SU coaching staff for just four years, he has 22 years of college coaching experience. In his time at SU, he vastly improved the Orange defense while his players have had a lot of confidence in him. Shafer has coaching experience at seven schools including Stanford and the University of Michigan.

Some fans on Marshal Street are hopeful their new coach will find success quickly.

Tim Shanahan said, "I'm optimistic to see if we can keep moving forward because it's been nice to watch us the last couple of years, coming from what we were before that."

Nicole Osborne said, "I feel pretty optimistic about it. I'm excited regardless. I don't think people are going to stop going to games. It's still going to be very exciting as students to go and see the team play in the ACC especially. So, I think it's going to be good."

Other fans say they think the program will struggle at least the first few years without Coach Marrone. Still, most are looking forward to next season.

Shafer will officially be introduced today at a press conference on the SU Hill at 12:30 p.m. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
