Baking is a holiday tradition for many families, but for most, their time in the kitchen probably doesn't involve 2,000 pounds of sugar. Sarah Blazonis caught up with a family whose pastries have been a Central New York tradition for 55 years.

NORTH SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- From cutting to icing to mixing, December 23 is crunch time at the Geddes Bakery.

"A lot of it's prep: Getting your fillings, cookies, cut outs we do and stuff like that, gingerbread men," said baker Peter Pappas.

It's all to make sure they're ready for their busiest day of the year: Christmas Eve.

"A line out the door. Cannot see the walls. It's one customer after another all day long," said bakery partner Michele Cousineau.

But the holiday rush is nothing new for siblings Cousineau and Pappas. They and their brother, John Pappas, are third generation owners of the bakery. It's a Central New York tradition that began 55 years ago.

"We all worked when my grandfather was here, whether it was just icing donuts or sweeping floors or emptying out the soda machine change," said Cousineau.

"I grew a passion for it working with my dad. It was nice because a lot of people don't get to see their family and we see ours," said Pappas.

Customers have become an extended family of sorts, with the same faces popping up on the other side of the counter year after year.

"I like that it's homemade. I like to support the local businesses as opposed to the bigger stores in the area," said regular customer Michelle Turtschin, who stopped in the bakery Sunday to pick up bread for Christmas dinner.

The hope is that that quality keeps them coming back throughout the year, as well.

"I take a lot of pride in what I do and so do the guys I work with," said Pappas. "So, when someone says to you, 'Hey, listen, I had some of your pies' or 'I had some of your cookies,' first thing I ask them is, 'Did you enjoy it?' They're like, 'Yeah.' I'm like, 'Okay.'"

And another satisfied customer means potentially another generation of sweet holidays.

While the bakery isn't normally open on holidays, it will be open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
