SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Volunteers are working furiously to get everything done in time for the annual Syracuse Salvation Army Christmas Bureau Distribution. They've been doing the toy and food giveaway for those in need for more than 30 years.

Every family gets one toy, one book and stocking stuffers per child. They also get a basket of food for a full holiday dinner.

Dozens of volunteers, including several school groups, have been sorting through donated items and setting up the tables for the distribution Friday.

"When we first got here, it was just kind of overwhelming because there were so many boxes and we just kept finding more," said eighth grader Olivia Byrnes.

"It's important because it just shows how a lot of people care about everything going on in our community," eighth grader Aimee Comanici said.

"It's been lots of work and I wanted to come out here and do this to help out my community and give back to those less fortunate," said seventh grader Griffin Cook.

This year, more than 2,800 people have registered for Friday's distribution.
