People in Newtown are still trying to comprehend what happened in their community Friday. Our Elaina Athans spoke with people in Newtown and has more.

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- "It's devastating, you know. We feel terrible for these families," one person said.

Unfathomable mourning for the people of Newtown, Connecticut a day after horror and mayhem at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Residents made their way to the site where 26 people, mostly children, were killed in a shooting.

“They were five, six, seven and kids! Why would someone do that?” one asked.

Vinny Alvarez's daughter, Cynthia, was inside Sandy Hook that tragic morning, hearing gunshots fired outside of her classroom and being told to duck underneath her desk.

Alvarez said, “We're going to try to get some counseling to make sure she's fine, but life goes on. This doesn't happen every day. Unfortunately it happened here.”

In this town, it's clear this community is desperate for healing. Signs posted outside of nearly every business, saying 'Pray for our victims' and 'Our hearts are with you.'

A group of college students home early for the holidays is raising money for the victims' families who have been robbed of so much so senselessly.

“We're all kinda coming together to cope and get over this together,” they said.

Sunday there will be a massive service, a vigil for the victims of the shooting. One which President Barack Obama will be attending. We are being told he will be in Connecticut Sunday, meeting with victims' families, as well as first responders.
