DEWITT, N.Y. -- The Air National Guard and the Salvation Army are teaming up to make the holidays a little brighter for those in need. The 174th Attack Wing accepted food and toy donations at Shoppingtown Mall for the annual Salvation Army Dropoff Day event.

A turkey, other food, and toys will be distributed to about 3,000 families in need and nearly 8,000 children on December 21st. The 174th Wing members were recently downstate, assisting families affected by Superstorm Sandy. They say seeing those who really need the help this holiday is a reminder of how simple generosity can make a difference.

"So they know what it means for a family that has lost everything or don't have anything for Christmas. So I think it's very personal for a lot of people this year,” said Lt. Col. Maureen Murphy, 124th Attack Wing Director of Staff.

About 70 people volunteered their time to help collect the donations.
