SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Students at Syracuse University are putting their design skills to the test. A group of 26 seniors is giving their input on how to transform the former Oval Wood Dish Factory in Tupper Lake.

The design students presented their sustainable reuse plans for the facility to a panel responsible for community development. The project is part of SU's 360 degree industrial and interaction design competition.

The team from Tupper Lake hopes the winning design plan will bring a spur of positive growth to the area while using local resources.

"The fact that these are industrial design students, they all know how to design products, but what are the sustainable products, possibly wood based or reusable product materials that could go into the future products that could be produced here in New York State," said Don Carr, SU Professor of Industrial and Interaction Design.

The Oval Wood Dish Factory hasn't seen work since 2008. Next Wednesday, the students will head up north to present their plans to the Village of Tupper Lake. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
