Juniors and seniors at Binghamton High School were thrown into the real world Thursday. They earned a college degree and got a job in their field of choice. After that, it was up to them to make ends meet, or at least try. YNN photographer Joseph Comings went along with them as they quickly learned that Life is a Reality.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Area high school students got a taste of the real world a little early.

Binghamton High School juniors and seniors took part in what's called the Life is a Reality project. It's put on by Visions Federal Credit Union.

Here's how it works: Students choose a career and they get a salary based on how much they'll be making in their first job out of college. The kids then went through life, or at least station to station, figuring out their monthly bills. From college and car loans to charitable contributions and entertainment, they quickly found out the importance of budgeting.

"They'll have students come in and think 'oh it's going to be a breeze. I'm going to have a job, I'm going to make this money.' They don't really realize all the work that goes into getting that job and then they are so used to mom and dad paying for everything that it’s a big eye opener when they are paying for a car, paying for a house, insurance, ect.," said Colleen Barton of Visions Federal Credit Union.

The Life is Reality program has traveled to several local schools over the past four years and continues to gain popularity among both students and teachers. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
