BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Opening statements were held Tuesday morning in the murder trial of Joseph Ross-Jones. Ross-Jones and another man, Daniel Doherty, are accused of killing Daniel Martinez, 27, last October.

Tuesday morning in court, prosecutors told jurors that Martinez sporadically lived in an apartment in the same building as Ross-Jones and Doherty. Prosecutors say Ross-Jones and Doherty owed Martinez more than $16,000 for marijuana.

They say the men drove Martinez into a rural area in the town of Chenango where they shot and stabbed Martinez more than 40 times.

The defense attorney claims that Doherty, who is expected to testify against Ross-Jones, is the one who killed Martinez and is trying to drag Ross-Jones into it in order to get a reduced sentence from the prosecution. The defense also pointed out that Ross-Jones has never been arrested and says that Doherty has told several versions of his story.
