SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Rosamond Gifford Zoo welcomes a new elephant. Doc is a15-year-old bull who will help the zoo continue its breeding program. He's not out in full view yet, because he's getting used to his new surroundings.
The former circus elephant comes from the Ringling Brothers Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida. But with his arrival comes the departure of another elephant. After 27 years, Indy has moved on to a new zoo in Missouri to help breed.
"So having him go somewhere else where there are unrelated females was the best thing for the population, for us, for him. And getting the new guy, Doc, is certainly going to help us move forward with our program," Zoo Director Ted Fox said.
Staff said while the move is bittersweet, they're excited to get Doc into the herd.
