The suspect involved in a 16-hour standoff in Solvay has died. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says Joseph Schell died this morning at Upstate University Hospital after apparently shooting himself in the head. SOLVAY, N.Y. -- The suspect in a 16-hour standoff in Solvay has died. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office says Joseph Schell, 29, died at Upstate University Hospital after shooting himself.

Schell was wanted on several outstanding warrants on domestic incidents and probation violations. Authorities tried to execute those warrants on Conklin Street Tuesday afternoon. They said Schell shot at officers, leading to the standoff.

The Onondaga County undersheriff says officers did not return fire out of concern for the community's safety.

Undersheriff Warren Darby said, "You're in a residential, populated area. You start a gunfight here, you're going to potentially endanger the public. We do not want to do that. We want our guys to be safe and out of the way."

The situation came to an end early this morning when investigators say Schell shot himself in the head.

No one else was hurt during the standoff.
