A shocking revelation in Cortland County, where the District Attorney has admitted to a brief career in adult films. YNN's Bill Carey says that word came after weeks of denials by the DA that he had lived that "second life."
CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Normally, it would be a routine event. A District Attorney meeting with the press after a comfortable victory in a race for a second term.
“I want to thank the good people of Cortland County for returning me to office to serve and protect my home community as your District Attorney,” said Mark Suben, Cortland County District Attorney.
But for weeks, Mark Suben has lived under a cloud. Claims were circulated, first by anonymous e-mails, and then in a Youtube video, claiming Suben, using the name Gus Thomas, had as a young man starred in several pornographic movies.
When he was asked about those claims, in the midst of a re-election campaign, Mark Suben denied he had ever been in adult films.
As he began his news conference today, he spoke of dealing with young people who make foolish mistakes, but are able to turn their lives around.
“I know this first hand, because I used bad judgment myself in my youth,” said Suben.
Faced with mounting evidence of his earlier life, the prosecutor knew he had lost his case.
“Those allegations are true. I was an actor in adult films for a short period in the early 70s. I was shocked and embarrassed to be confronted with this so many years later. I was embarrassed for my family and friends, who have stood by me,” said Suben.
Suben admitted he had lied to them as well.
“I humbly apologize to all who have supported me and believed in me from the bottom of my heart,” said Suben.
There is no penalty for having had this "second life" or even for lying to family, friends and reporters. Suben refused to answer questions on whether he would resign. His message for now is simply that he's sorry.
