It's a big move for what started out as a small operation. Ithaca Beer Company has opened the doors to its new taproom and brewery. Tamara Lindstrom tells us about the local company that's doubled in size and what visitors can expect to find.
ITHACA, N.Y. -- It's been just over a year since Ithaca Beer Company broke ground on its new 15,000 square foot brewery. But for workers and loyal customers, the wait is over.
"It's great. There's been a ton of pressure just from people driving through the parking lot day after day and knowing they want to get in. And us trying to finish up and get open and get back to normal," said Dan Mitchell, owner of Ithaca Beer Company.
"Now that this inside is totally finished, the people that were in here were thoroughly impressed. And everybody that's been coming and going has been impressed with what they see from the outside as well," said Ithaca Beer Company employee Aaron Thurston.
The move has doubled the company's size. The brewery will soon offer tours and a restaurant, but for now, patrons can taste nearly a dozen different beers in the tap room.
"We have out beers on draught. We're pouring beers. We've got pints and tastings. We've got a nice cheese plate that we're tasting. And the next step is the full service restaurant."
Right now, Ithaca Beer is distributed in seven states and the growing brewery is making a name for itself.
Mitchell said, "If you come here on a weekend, you see every state in a thousand mile range that are coming through here."
"It's a very, very proud feeling to know that not only am I a part of Ithaca Beer, but that Ithaca Beer is finally being recognized for all the good that it does," Thurston said.
Mitchell says keeping it simple has made the company successful.
"They're just nice, solid tasting beers. We stay within a proper range and we just make it so you can enjoy a glass after another. And not try to go too crazy in any one direction," Mitchell said.
As to whether the beers will ever be sold nationwide, Mitchell says they need to catch up on current demand first.
The new brewery is located just behind the old facility on Route 13 in Ithaca. The tap room is open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.
