UTICA, N.Y. -- The national tour of the Tony-nominated musical "American Idiot" is set to open in Utica this week and is expected to leave close to a million dollars behind.

That's because it chose the city as the site for its tech show, where the cast and crew meet to put together the complete show for the first time.

It's the second tech show to come to the area this season, following "Young Frankenstein."

Performers and crew members are in the area for 12 days perfecting the musical, which tells the story of three friends who move to the big city to pursue their dreams, all set to Green Day music.

"It's a very precise show, actually. In all the chaos that it seems like, it's very precise so that nobody actually gets hurt," said Van Hughes, who plays "Johnny" in the show.

"Yeah, it's really nice to do it over and over again because you're constantly, at least definitely for me, having never done the show, you're constantly discovering so many things," said Gabrielle McClinton, the actress who portrays "Whatsername."

Tickets are still available for this Wednesday and Thursday's shows at the Stanley.
