PAMELIA, N.Y. -- The investigation into a high speed chase that ended in a deadly car crash in the Town of Pamelia continues. State Police say it started just after 5:00 p.m. Monday when Francis T. Morgia II, 48, stole an 84-year-old woman's purse at a department store and then fled the scene.
After the suspect failed to pull over for police, a high speed chase began. That's when Morgia lost control of his car at the intersection of Route 342 and 12 and slammed into another vehicle.
One passenger in the second car, Shirley Hammond, 75, died from her injuries at the hospital. Another passenger Autumn Tharrett, 25, was airlifted to University Hospital in Syracuse and is now in stable condition. The other two people in the vehicle were treated and released from the hospital.
Morgia was subsequently charged with manslaughter, unlawfully fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, and robbery.
He has been arraigned in Town of Pamelia Court and officials say he could face additional charges.
