SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In these tough economic times, feeding the hungry is an ever-growing problem for food banks. But the Food Bank of Central New York got a big boost Friday, thanks to the Syracuse University men's basketball team.

Once again, the team partnered with Tops Friendly Markets for their "Slams for Jams" promotion, which donates one case each of peanut butter and jelly to the Food Bank for every dunk. The result this past season was 78 slams, meaning 1,872 total jars!

Every donation is crucial for the Food Bank, which served an average of 23,000 meals per day last year. And one of the freshman players who was unaware of the program says he'll look to do a little more next season.

"I didn't have no clue this was going on. Maybe in the back of my mind, instead of laying it up, I'll go for every dunk," said C.J. Fair.

"Any kind of community awareness is greatly appreciated. There's so much need in Central and Northern New York, so any awareness we can create with the help of the SU sports teams, Tops Friendly Markets, any partnerships like that, we really appreciate," said Ania Stilwell, Food Bank of CNY Public Relations Manager.

The food bank also benefits from partnerships between Tops and the SU football, women's basketball and lacrosse teams.
