Enjoy the "dog days" of winter with a snowy getaway with a four-legged friend in Stowe, Vt. Time Warner Cable News Reporter Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

Chappy, a Brittany spaniel visiting from Martha's Vineyard, is a repeat guest at Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Vt.

"We feel that Chappy is honored and really treated like a little person here, and she's quite happy being with all the people," said one person.

"They do a great job taking care of the dogs and give them good treats, and they don't get mad when they bark," said another.

Topnotch is top dog for canine companions traveling with their uprights on vacation.

"We welcome them with dog beds, dog bowls, and I always write them a welcome note and a little package of treats, and they all learn to stop at my desk, where we have lots of extra treats," said Carol Crawford, lead concierge at Topnotch Resort and Spa.

Well known for its indoor pool and spa complex, dogs can also get pampering in room with a staff massage therapist.

Topnotch's generous dog policy charges four-on-the-floors just $25 extra for the entire stay. A current package they are offering, Canine Be Mine, waives that fee.

As I discovered on a media visit, Topnotch isn't the only resort in Stowe that will put a "roof-roof" over your head.

The Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa has seven dog-friendly rooms, each with a gas fireplace to keep you and your furry friend frost-free. The enclosed courtyard is a safe play space for your pooch, and there are five kilometers of surrounding trails.

Midweek stays start at $189 per night for a minimum two-night stay. The dog fee is $40 extra per night for up to two dogs.
