Even non-skiers can enjoy a trip to a ski town. In this week’s Travel Report, Valarie D’Elia takes a look at the luxurious side of Lake Placid.

Lake Placid isn’t just any ski town, and the Mirror Lake Inn isn’t just any resort.

“We see ourselves in the business of creating experiences for people that should be memorable and pleasant,” said Ed Weibrecht, owner of Mirror Lake Inn.

The Mirror Lake Inn resort and spa is a reflection of the Adirondack lifestyle that surrounds it.

Among its multiple accolades, it holds a AAA Four Diamond designation for both food and lodging.

The owner is used to raising champions; Ed Weibrecht’s son Andrew is not only a black diamond skier, but a 2010 Olympic bronze medalist and a contender for a slot on the U.S. ski team in Sochi.

“He just started skiing and we supported that at a very young age, probably well before he was two years old and probably skied all of Whiteface Mountain before he was three,” said Weibrecht.

If there were an Olympics of hospitality, the Lake Placid Lodge would also be a competitor. So effortlessly rustic and stylish, it looks as if it jumped from the pages of a Ralph Lauren catalog.

On a media visit to the area, I found that perfecting the meditative art of lighting a fire is a more than adequate substitute for the absence of TVs.

The 30 lakeside cabins and lake view guest rooms are decorated with hand-crafted furniture, and the bathrooms sport sinfully deep soaking tubs. A robust breakfast is delivered to the room as part of the hefty nightly rate, which is mercifully reduced by 25 percent for two night stays booked before the end of February.

A pet-friendly policy is so much so, it defines the phrase, “A dog’s life. “
