Pure Barre is a new workout routine that seeks to raise the bar for fitness. Jill Urban tells us what it's all about.

It may look like a simple stretching or ballet bar class, but this class is anything but simple. It’s called Pure Barre and it is certainly raising the bar for people looking for a deep body changing workout.

“Pure Barre is a total body workout, 55 minutes, targeting the backs of the arms, abs, seat and thighs, so really we are just working on women’s troubled areas,” said co-owner of Pure Barre Kaitlin Vandura.

Pure Barre is combination of ballet, Pilates and weights. Here with the help of a ballet bar, participants work those small, deep stabilizing muscles to tone and sculpt the body. While the class is considered low impact, it definitely has a high impact on your muscles.

“The whole concept behind Pure Barre is really small isometric movements, you fatigue the muscle, you will notice people’s legs start to shake a lot during class, so working to bring the muscles to fatigue and then stretching it all out,” said Vandura.

Because the movements are small and trigger targeted muscles, it’s hard to tell from watching just how challenging the class is, but anyone who has taken it will tell you it is definitely an intense workout.

“It's absolutely intense,” said participant Adrienne Lotson. “It’s a cardio workout as well as a strength training workout. People think well you have these nice little ballet bars and these cute little moves, it's nothing like that. Your heart rate is up the entire time for 55 minutes and you are working as hard as you possibly can within your zone and it’s great.”

“You are so focused and you are working so deep within your muscles that the sweat is pouring off you, but it’s exciting because you can feel that you are shaking, you feel you are pushing yourself, it’s unbelievable,” said class participant Sandy Sockett.

While it requires physical endurance, it also calls for mental focus as you’re challenged to find the right muscles.

Most people say you see results after 10 classes, but these participants say you’ll feel motivated and invigorated after only one.

Pure Barre has 150 studios throughout the country and classes average about $33, depending on the package, but once you know the techniques, you can easily do some of the exercises at home.
